One of the most recent things I have taken on is working with cabinetry design. I have really enjoyed this as it allows me to create amazing pieces to fit the space and the owners expectations. When the builder hands over keys, in this particular condo, it is a bare shell. Like many new builds, you have the options available to customize your own space with the builder options for cabinetry, counter tops, flooring etc. In this new build, it’s a bit different.
We were given the flooring (large size ceramic tiles), wall colour, a neutral light grey, and granite countertop, and a stone counter in the bathrooms.
We could then either purchase at a cost the cabinetry for the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms.
Here is the picture of the shell we got on delivery, no cupboards in the kitchen, no cabinets in the bedrooms, and no vanity under the bathroom countertop. The countertops are fabulous, but that is all you got!
This is what the builder could provide in the way of cabinetry. There is nothing wrong with this cabinetry. It is light and airy, however, it is made of pressboard. The cost is extra to the cost of the condo.
Different to North American builders, this is not unique to the Mexican way of purchasing new builds. It does although, allow you to choose what you like. The standard kitchen cabinets were limited in the number of uppers you get, then again, you could ask for more, just at an added cost.
This is what I designed for each room. I had a local cabinet maker manufacture the cabinets for each room. It is using solid Cedro. A local wood not prone to termites. It smells beautifully in the home. It is at least 1 inch thick, and it is after all solid wood! The difference is really minimal compared to what you get, builder vs. cabinet maker costs. I love that I designed everything, and it came out beautifully. Of note, the built in Hutch is our 3rd bedroom, which we turned into a separate dining room. More about his in another blog!
The amount of upper cabinetry we got for virtually little extra, was well worth it! I got extra storage space, frosted glass inserts, and a slide out beside the stove, for spices or other items. They also had soft close hinges. This is what I call CUSTOM!!
In the bedroom, I designed the built in drawers and hanging space, to allow for more fluid movement in the bedroom. The mirrored doors allow for the walls to be used for prized art work. This eliminates the need for additional storage, as the area above the cabinets allows the suitcases to be tucked away neatly, with any blankets or pillows for extra guests. Also, the room doesn’t need a dresser, to clutter to room, everything, has its place in the custom designed built in cabinet!
Let me know your thoughts on the designs! I’d love to hear from you!
